In the past week we started talking about Romanticism and Romantic era landscape paintings by Hudson River School Painter Thomas Cole and his peers. We learned that this style of painting was simply about showing beauty and the awe in confronting the sublime within nature.
We also looked at a two photographers, Robert Adams and Ansel Adams. Robert Adams became interested in documenting how the western landscapes of North America had been shaped by human influence. Much earlier in the 20th century, Ansel Adams began creating fantastic black and white photographs of the west before man's intrusion. All three of these men had a similar focus when dealing with their subject matter...beauty.

Both Cole and Robert Adams show the landscape in a very beautiful way. However, where Cole takes makes the land cleared away from farming appear just as beautiful as the sublime and unkempt areas that still belong to nature, Adams creates a juxtoposition by showing land that has been damaged by man. This is not to say that his photographs are not beautiful, quite the contrary, through use of lighting he creates amazing prints, he simply makes the statement that perhaps man has overstayed his welcome in nature and needs to begin giving back to the earth.
ReplyDeletePlease explain how each of these people represented the landscape.
ReplyDeleteThomas Cole shows the landscape in color. This gives it a greater affect. Also the paintings of the landscapes are shown as he views them. He can add his own look on it and can control the way the light hits the landscape. His paintings are also always showing something happening in the pictures, whether it’s a tree falling down or fog moving in.
Ansel Adams pictures are all in black and white. In his pictures the black and white is very noticeable. There are very few spots with a lot of gray area. He also focuses more on what he wants you to notice in the picture and somewhat blurs the background.
Robert Adams pictures are also all in black and white. The difference with his pictures is the lighting. In his pictures there are a lot of noticeable shadows or bright lights.
Please explain how each of these people represented the landscape.
ReplyDeleteThomas Cole represented the landscape exactly how it appeared. He painted the scene and captured all of the beauty in it. It is amazing how he has captured every detail from the clouds starting to form rain to the bark on the trees.
Robert Adams has a more surreal vibe to his landscapes. He also represents exactly how they appear but I feel his photos show a negative side to industrialism and the way it affects natural beauty.
Ansel Adams also captures natures natural beauty in his landscapes. They are all in black an white which really capture every detail in the photos. I also noticed that Ansel focuses on the foreground of his photos rather than the background.
What makes them different besides the medium? Cole does a lot of European based landscape paintings that convey the visual representation of the struggle between wilderness and civilization. He shows interest in European history because in his landscape picture he directs the view of the scene down the valley toward the farmland is a trademark of celebrated French landscapist Claude Lorrain. Robert Adams on the other hand sticks more to wildness landscapes and shy's away from human subjects. Adams tries to capture the landscape as unscathed by the human presence. Lastly, Ansel Adams to me is not very different from Robert Adams because he is known for black and white photography and does wilderness landscape pictures. His photographs show what national parks looked like before human intervention and travel. I mean their ways of going about it may be different but both Robert Adams and Ansel Adams focus on the same point of view.
ReplyDeleteCole shows the lanscape as man is changing it, almost a man vs. nature aspect. While Cole shows this aspect, Robert Adams does something similar but doesn't capture the presence of human beings in his work. He shows nature and how man has affected it without them actually being in the photograph.
ReplyDeleteAs for Ansel Adams, he captures nature in all it's purity. Both Robert and Ansel Adams show their work in black and white photographs while Cole used color in his paintings.
All of their works are beautiful and capture nature in a different aspect.
Cole uses to color to show the landscape. I think this makes the viewer almost feel the landscape more, like the giant storm clouds coming in. The color he uses shows the power of the landscape.
ReplyDeleteRobert Adams uses photography to show the landscape how he really sees it, how it has been changed by people, and uses black and white for this.
Ansel Adams black and white style is similar to Robert Adams in that they both use photography that is black and white. He shows more of how the landscape would look if humans never were on it, while Robert Adams shows more of the change in the landscape.
All three show the same thing.. the landscape although each puts it in a different view, from using color to show the power of nature, to showing us how the landscape has changed to showing us how it would look if we were never here.
Is it enough in our current culture to just pursue beauty without any other content attached?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion yes beauty is enough to pursue on without any other content involved. In the overall affect of art work today, the viewer is looking for the beauty of that piece whether its a sculpture, painting, or photograph! Its all in the eyes of the viewer and how they want to interpret the piece of art. Beauty is a characteristic of a person, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning, or satisfaction. Beauty is so many different things all in one word that a piece of art can go off of only beauty and be just as well known as one with many different concepts!
Cole showed the landscape as untouched by humans and used color to show its beauty. And Robert Adams paiting show landscape that has been affected by the touch of man on this earth. Ansel Adams uses a black and white style to show the simplisity od nature. All the three painters see nature in a different way and want to show others how they view nature... which makes all there art work different.
ReplyDeleteThomas cole, he shows the landscape as being a relaxing moment something that has never been touch by humans. i actually love his landscaping painting because it really showcases the thought of beauty and what beauty should realte too in our everyday lives. the thought of Robert Adams and Ansel Adams is different they will actaully represent beauty by the touch of humann's, don't get me wrong.....their art can somewhat be romantic, but by the landscaping being touch by humans, it doesn't really brings out the beauty of it and what message your trying to send.
ReplyDeleteone thing that these 3 artists have in common is their love for civilization. Cole in "the oxbow" has the civilization enriched with beautiful yellows and greens as the storm (nature) slowly invades it. Robert Adams, who took pictures near a nuclear weapons plant, photographed actual citizens capturing their expressions. He noted he found something admirable in their eyes. Ansel, took photos of farm workers at Manzanar War Relocation Center with Mt. Williamson in the background. all 3 bring out a struggle between wilderness and civilization. how these are different? thomas cole, since he is actually painting the scenes, can create as much dramatic tension between nature and civilization he can paint with! as the adams brothers, take on black and white photgraphs. with robert focusing on more "tragic" scenes, the trees and stumps being grounded up from man
ReplyDeletePlease explain how each of these people represented the landscape.
ReplyDeleteThomas Cole really knew how to capture the true beauty of the land by capturing it excalty how it looked. He had such amazing detail from the sky to the ground and everything makes if feel as if I was there.
Ansel Adams did a good job with his black and white photogrpahy. He seemed to be more focused on the object it self and not what is going on around it.
Robert Adams seemed to capture more of the light aspects of the picture, or it seemed like he liked bright things. Its almost like it changed the natural beauty of it.
Thomas cole, unlike the others, uses color in his landscape. Color tends to make others analyze the entire picture, and not just certain parts. The landscape to me is represented twice in the picture. The right side seems calm, happy, and content. The left side, on the other hand, is darker because it appears a storm is moving in.
ReplyDeleteAnsel Adams uses black and white. But there is also quite a bit of gray all around. This gray creates a darker tone to the landscapes. In some of the works, it seems like it would be a beautiful, colorful sunny day. But, because of the use of black and white, one can't be sure of that. Maybe this is what he was going for.
Robert Adams uses black and white pictures as well to capture his landscape. The difference between his work and Ansel's is, there always seems to be a focal point that stands out, even in black and white. Everything that is not the focal point fades in the background.
Is it enough in our culture to just pursue beauty without any other content attached?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion yes and no. Beauty is everywhere but i think anyonhe who is in the public eye has a sort of responsibility to pursue some sort of a cause. Art especially has the potential to help the greater good. Robert Adams understands beauty and his work is beautiful but he uses it not only to portray the glory of the landscape but to show the horrors of what we do to it. In the same way that Barbara Kruger and Cindy Sherman use their work to show feminist issues. His work is dark and interesting which to me puts it on a higher level then Thomas Cole.
I can't stand artists like Thomas Kincaid with his quaint little cottages and babbling brooks. I think their only use is to decorate dentists offices. On the other hand i do like Thomas Cole and i would hang is work in my house.
by the way i am Elisabeth Ali
ReplyDeletePost by Andrew Arter:
ReplyDeleteCole has artwork that just breathes beauty. The combination of lush color and heavy contrast makes me feel like I am there. The cold feel of the shadows comes through the dark tones, and the warmth of the fields comes through the streaks of light tones.
Ansel Adams has an interesting style. He is different from the others in that he captures not only the people and the individual structures of the area, but the landscape as a whole. The contrast of the background to the foreground is a prominent feature of his photographs.
Robert Adams seems to have more of a singular focus in his photographs. The artwork is arguably more meaningful, or atleast more specific. As a side note, I thought that Ansel's work was more beautiful, and I also thought it was ironic that both Ansel and Robert had the same last name.
I think that artists should definitely be aloud to focus strictly on beauty. I think that in our current society people lose sight of the big picture and get stressed with the fine details of work and thought. Beautiful images, i believe, can relax people in a brightness un-paralell to any other kind. That is why I think art should be aloud to just be beautiful, and nothing more.
Post by Bradley Masenheimer:
ReplyDeleteThese are two very different artists. Thomas Cole gives us images of the sublime beauty of nature. Robert Adams shows us the devastation that man leaves behind. Yes they both show "beauty", but I would say their main agendas are separate.
Even their choices in style are completely different. Cole shows us color and grandeur. Sure there are stumps in his work as well, but the way Adams does it is altogether different. To me Adams points at you in the face and yells. I do not feel love from Adams pictures, I feel a blame casted over me.
I don't know if I truly understand the question about pursuing beauty without content attached. To me beauty is a personal perspective. So, is it enough for our culture to just pursue beauty without any "strings" attached. Yes, but only to each individual person. I may look at something, someone, etc, and find it/them beautiful, but anyone else may not. I think that even thinking how beautiful something is in your head is adding content to it. For me I feel the "beauty" for an instant before my brain starts to pump information to account for the why. But, for that instant I feel the sublime.
It seems to me that Cole and Ansel Adams were much more alike in what their pantings and photographs are trying to show. Robert on the other hand still shows nature but primarily wants to show people what humanity is doing to the environment.
ReplyDeleteI like Cole and Ansel's work much better because they show the beauty of the land itself, unaltered. Their works are much easier and nicer to look at. When I look at Roberts work its depressing and all I can see is destruction. I think he does this so that people will change their mind on conserving the environment. So not only is he creating a work of art, but he is also getting his message across that mankind is destroying nature.
I think that all of these artists represented the landscape very well in all of their work. I like how Cole shows a little bit of everything in his picture and he captures great detail with everything in it. He really captures the intensity of the scene in his work.
ReplyDeleteRobert Adams shows the destruction of what has occured in his photos. He wants the viewer to see what is happening and think what could have been with this area. I think he captures the landscape in his work to show people what is happening.
Ansel Adams captures more of a beautiful view of the enviorment. He wants the darks and light expressed in his photos. I think that he took his photos this way to represent the true beauty of the landscape.

The three all show the different relationships that humans have with nature. Cole shows a relaxing portray of nature with the colors that he decided to show. He portrays the beauty of nature as being untouched. However, the storm coming can also be a representation of things to come with the human interference in nature. Ansel Adams and Robert Adams both show the humans involvement in nature. Ansel Adams showed the simplicity of nature in black and white before humans became involved in the areas and looking at them not it shows how big of an impact humans really have. Robert Adams photographed the involvement that humans have in it by showing the damage directly in the pictures. Overall the three are all about nature but represent it all differently.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Adam's and Coles different way to show the landscapes. Cole obviously adds the color which I enjoy more. I believe it makes it easier to understand the landscapes. You can tell in his painting that the darkness is coming in and ruining a beautiful day. I'm not sure you would be able to tell that if it was in black and white.
ReplyDeleteI like how Adamspaints to show what the land looks like because of man and what they have done to it. Although, I dont like the simplicity that Adams goes for. Between the three artists, I think it is obvious that they see and read into nature much differently. And that will cause a much different outcome in paintings
Cole and Adams are both very different artists but in a good way. They can both catch the beauty of nature in their art peices. Cole uses color to express the beauty of nature, Which I personally enjoy more. I can understand it better when it is in color. Each figure in the painting is more distinct then. Cole uses black and white photographs to capture the beauty of nature. He does not only capture the beauty of nature but the damage done by man, it brings out the impact we humans actually have on the landscape. Until we see the photo's we don't actually see what kind of impact we have on the land.
ReplyDeleteCole shows a bit of everyting in his artwork and in great detail. Robert Adams shows the destruction and impact the humans have on the land. He wants us to see what could have been done with the land and what is happening. Ansel Adams captures the true beauty of the land through black and white.
Thomas Cole was a painter of landscapes and was therefore able to adapt his landscape to what he believed was beautiful. He paints the landscape as he sees it, but almost always adds something to it to express that man does not own the land, but is just borrowing it. In all of his paintings you can see nature in action. In this particular painting we can see the rain coming in, on the left. And on the right we clearly see what humankind did to the landscape. But still, nature is the main character in this painting, and man has just a small part in the painting.
ReplyDeleteCole makes use of value. He uses the same color (green), but by using different shades of green creates depth and different light.
In Robert Adams’ photographs value is also very important. His photographs are black and white and he uses the different value to focus on certain parts of the photograph. Where “man” is just a minor part of Cole’s paintings, “man” plays a big role in most of Adams’ photographs. Especially what man did to nature. The focus is on that, and then you start seeing the nature in the photographs. So, even though there is not an actual person in all of his photographs, man is the main subject.
Ansel Adams’ photographs show us the way man works together with nature to create something beautiful. In these photographs humankind has not destroyed nature for their own good; they rather made it more beautiful. Adams really made use of the different types of light. In his photographs you can see that the sun, or clouds and shadows are very much present. This creates value again.
I do think that pursuing beauty without any other content is enough in our current culture. Art is all about feeling, thinking and beauty. And when you make something that is very beautiful, it doesn’t matter if you did or did not make it with an idea behind it, because people will always have some kind of feeling when looking at something.
I would have to say no, it is not enough in our current culture to just pursue beauty without any content to back it. Nowadays with modern and contemporary art having such complex ideas and meanings behind the work it seems like the simplicity of something beatiful is not enough to be considered a successful or well thought out piece of work. Personally, sometimes I prefer to look at an artists work just for the beauty in it and I think many others would agree. Yet today its all about whats new or "pop" in other words. It seems artwork done for its beauty is essentially played out, and an artist would be taking the easy street so to say if they were to create a piece based on pure beauty. Although, I don't think beauty in art will quite ever fade completely because I believe it is one of many vital concepts of art that makes art, make sense.
ReplyDeleteEach one of these artistes utilized a different aspect of nature. Cole focused more on the wildness of nature similar to that of an angry beast with civilization being the calm and quite. Robert focused more on the impact of humans in the American west, with garbage, half built homes, and clear cut forests. But that still in the mist of all the misery there was hope to return the west to a state of glory it had been at before. Ansel, having been out west before Robert was able to view the glorious American West taking most of his pictures in Yosemite. He captured the wild beauty of the west in its most natural state.
ReplyDeleteThe period in which each of these artistes viewed or captured their work, Cole in 1836, Ansel in 1984, and Robert in 1937. Culture will be different for each of these man, swaying them to view a certain aspect of nature or in some case accentuate an idea.
In most cases, yes, it is hard, everyone is looking for an underlying meaning to everything, and nothing is simple any more when it comes to art. You want to be able to identify with a piece and that is what people do now a days. People might just be bored with the beauty of a landscape, personally landscapes pieces are my favorite.

ReplyDeletePlease explain how each of these people represented the landscape.
Thomas Cole representation is obviously more colorful than the black white photos of Robert Adams. However, Robert Adams is trying to depict damages that civilians have caused to nature. His works are very simple at times with just one image but show so much of the overstayed welcome for humans. The black and white adds to the dreary depiction of the cracked stones or the damaged roads. In comparison, Cole is trying to incorporate that there are positives between nature and the civilians. The stormy weather represents some of the struggles between them but they are still able to survive in a way. The wilderness is the closer image and is standing tall whereas the civilians are in the distance working hard. Thomas Cole tries to leave nature and civilians’ working in its place but Robert Adams makes sure to capture the struggles of nature.
Thomas Cole wants represent the struggle between wilderness and civilization, but still considers this to be beautiful. He is a painter, and captures the landscape in the way his eyes saw the landscape. Even though everything looks very realistic, it was his view on what was beautiful and that was what he focussed on. Robert Adams on the other hand just focussus on the results that civilization had on nature, which can be very impressive and most people would say that the nature which he fotographs is not beautiful anymore. His pictures, the way he captures the land, on the other hand, are beautiful which leads us back to the whole idea of Romanticism agian. Finally Ansel Adams just wants to give us a view of what nature would look like today, without the human intervention. The images in his pictures realy pop out, because he was able to capture so many details.
ReplyDeleteI personally do not believe that beauty is enough to pursue on without any other content involved. I think, that in the end, it is the individual viewer who decides whether something is beautiful. It is an opinion or a statement. When we would take a look at the romanticism period for instance, and looked at Robert Adams's work, we would almost all agree that the nature he captured in his pictures is not beautiful. For some people this would make the picture an ugly picture, but others might look further and see that the message and the quality of the fotograph comes across and that the picture is actually very beautiful.
All three artists show a depp respect for the beuaty of nature. They all use a relatively similiar subject to base their work on, but it is what they are trying to represent that differentiates them. Thomas Cole has chosen to show an symbiotic vision of the human race and nature. He shows small houses as if they were as natuaral as bird nests. It portrays man and nature to be happily in tune with each other. Robert Adams has taken a much different approach to showing the beauty of a natural landscape. He shows the impact man has had on a landscape opposing the harmony of nature. His depiction of beauty destroyed by industry and human biproduct gives the viewer a feeling of guilt. A feeling of wanting to change our actions towards the earth. Ansel Adams portrays a very unihabited landscape. He shows landscapes without any human interaction. Showing the rawness of the earth. An unspoiled scene, almost apperaing as a foreign land due to its seclusion from man.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I would like to rank them, my favorite artist of the three to the least. 1 Cole 2. Ansel Adams 3. Ropbert Adams. Cole is my fovorite because he captures all of the details by hand. The water and the clouds grab my attention. That is what I like about Ansel Adams work too, but the fact that it is painted instead of photographed makes it that much more interesting to me. Robert Adams is ranked last because, although his pictures are good, they look like they are a page out of any common history book.(it makes sense because he is trying to portray a history of deforestization(which is very important but not as interesting as the contrast in the work of the other two artists)) I also liked to compare the smooth hillsides in Cole's work to the jagged peaks in Ansel's.
ReplyDeleteThe use of color in Thomas Cole's paintings is personally more enjoyable. He does a very good job at portraying the landscapes as admirable as they already are, not focusing on how they have been changed by humans like Robert Adam's. Robert Adam's focuses mainly on the physical traces humans leave behind. Although his photography is black and white, it still shows an important view of nature. Ansel Adam's also focuses more on the beauty of the landscape itself. He uses the contrast and resolution in his black and white photographs to show the best features of each landscape.
ReplyDeleteBlog Post
ReplyDeleteThomas Cole was about painting landscapes that showed the progression of man. His work shows the struggle between nature and man. Robert Adams used black and white photographs to show the negative impact that man has on the environment. Ansel Adams used black and white photographs to just capture the beauty of nature and capturing the perfect moment to take his picture. I believe that beauty is enough for art today because I personally would rather look at a beautiful landscape than a sideways urinal.
Please explain how each of these people represented the landscape.
ReplyDeleteThomas Cole-He was the type of painter that used the European conventions to influence his paintings. His paintings were visual representations of the struggle between wilderness and civilization. Using soft green and yellow colors to bring out the beauty of the picture. While the Stormy side represented
the uncontrolable side nature.
Robert Adams-Was a black and white photographer that took scenes of the American west. His photos showed how human activity affects the landscape over decades.
Ansel Easton Adams- Just like Robert Adams he used black and white photographs of the American west. His photos were more contrast influenced to bring out the best of the pictures
Thomas Cole is an exceptional painter. In his paintings he captures every little detail and different scenes going on at one time. Like in "The Oxbow", it show on one side a dark, rainy and disastrous side, as if the storm is about to blow in and cause havoc and damage. One the other side in which the storm seems to be heading, it is clear blue skies, bright sunny and beautiful landscape of a river and mountains. He captures the beauty of each different scene in one, and does it with extraordinary lighting and color.
ReplyDeleteMany of Robert Adams photographs are in black and white and show a kind of destruction done to nature by man and their industries. Also photographs of houses and people in their everyday life. Adams represents more of what is happening to nature and the outcomes of i guess you could say civilization and industrialization.
Like Thomas Cole, Ansel Adams focuses more on just the natural earth, like valleys, mountains, sunsets, trees, rivers, lakes etc. Also, like Robert Adams, Ansel Adams did these photos in black and white. Although they are in black and white, you can still see the intensity and emphasis of the sun, sunsets, and clouds, and the depths of the valleys and mountains.
Ansel Adams did most, if not all, of his photographs in black and white. The black and white create a contrast in the works of art. Sometimes in his photos, he makes the subject stand out more than the background. From what I saw, Thomas Cole paints scenes of landscapes. He does them in color. Cole also uses different lighting techniques to create different effects in the paintings. You can see them from his point of view. Robert Adams’ work is also mostly composed of black and white.
ReplyDeleteThomas cole does his art work in landscapes which are colored. Ansel adams did all his photgraphs in black and white. I think putting the picture in black and white makes it stand out and contrast more. Robert adams work is also in black and white but it is slighty different from Ansel Adams work.
ReplyDeleteThomas seems to have the most in common with Ansel Adams as they both seems to work with contrasts of shadows in nature. Robert Adams on the other hand seems to work more with situations and actions or objects.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThomas Cole uses more color in his paintings and seems to capture the beauty in nature. He paints landscapes that shows civilization and nature colliding. Ansel Adams and Robert Adams were very similar in a lot of ways, because of the black and white photographs, but Robert Adams took photographs that were showing landscapes effected by humans while Ansel Adams took pictures of landscapes as they naturally were.
ReplyDeleteThomas Cole, Robert Adams and Ansel Adams all had unique methods of presenting there art work. While focusing on the beauty of nature and its surroundings, Cole used intensity or saturation of color to emphasize the beauty of nature. The composition of trees and plants also helped bring out the serene qualities of nature. Robert Adams represented his landscape as occupied by human life, while you can still see beauty in large areas, the terrain looks somewhat abused, deprived of resources and torn down. Ansel adams took a similar interest in using black and white colors to bring out his art work. Adams focused more on the lighting to show the detail of natures beautiful occupants such as plants.
ReplyDeleteWhen looking at three different pictures by these artist I saw that besides the medium, the composition or arrangement of objects within the landscape being shown both in the photographs and paintings helped focus on the intended main Idea. ~MsBentley~
Thomas Cole's work was focused primarily on the importance of man's effect on nature. However, he chose to show the juxtaposition of farmland and wilderness as something that could be very beautiful. Robert Adams showed a more negative opinion of man taking over nature, but he remained hopeful that if enough people understood the serious consequences of human consumption, perhaps things might change. Ansel Adams was more concerned with finding beautiful shots than making any type of political statement. However, he did support the efforts being made to bring awareness to the effects man was having on nature.
ReplyDeleteI believe that an artist should be free to give their work a deeper meaning than just creating a beautiful painting or photograph. They choose art as a way to express themselves or to make a comment on society, and I believe that they have every right to do so. However, I also think that if an artist simply wants to create a beautiful piece of art, they also should be free to do so.
I think the artist's had different agendas for sure. The way Robert and Ansel's art was done to me, seemed a lot different then Cole's, with the lack of color. And as far as pursuing only beauty, I think it's possible to focus on just the beauty of something without having any deriving meaning behind it. Just because something looks good doesn't make it meaningful, it just looks nice. It could have meaning, but sometimes the sheer beauty of something is enough.
ReplyDeleteThomas Cole liked to paint the landscape and show its beauty and the power of nature. Ansel Adams took photographs of the natural landscape before man had come in and destroyed its beauty. Lastly, Robert Adams took photographs of everything going on in nature like pollution in hopes that it could someday go away and leave the earth to become beautiful once more. They each had different reasons for capturing nature the way that they did. Cole like to see the power of mother nature, Ansel like to show the natural beauty, and Robert showed what he would like to be fixed in nature. I believe that in our current culture we can look at something and just say wow that’s beautiful without strings attached. I don’t think we have reached the point where when we look at everything out there we always say that something is behind that or there’s a purpose for that beside pure pleasure in the beauty of it.

Coles shows landscape in beautiful color. Ansel Adams was a photographer who took pictures of the landscapes so there isn't much difference besides Colese could change the scenes a little bit to to emphasis certain parts of the painting. Robert adams has a diffrent view to the landscapes because he makes them kinda dull and sad but the progresssion of man.
ReplyDeleteI think that both artist had to seperate agenda's for there works. Although, they both use landscapes as their theme the message that they are trying to get acroos are diffrent. Thomas Cole he paints the landscapes after they have been destroyed, by humans or animals. I believe his point his to show the beauty through damaged goods. In his painting he wants to show the other side of things. While, Robert Adams takes photo's of landscapes. Him and his wife try to stress the damage that we are enflicting on the environment. Adams try's to get his viewers to see the damage, in hope that they would try to stop it.
ReplyDeleteTo compare and contrast between these artists, one would be that while Coles paintings give you a visualization of nature, and civilization, and how nature has a certain power over human life. But how civilization in some parts take over nature, and is just as beautiful. Adams photography gives you visulization of nature where civilization or human life once was! An the beauty of the known or unknown life that was there. The different types of mediums that they use obviously are Coles does paintings, and Adams does photography. Another medium is that from the sample painting Coles uses certain colors from bright to dark to compare the power of both sceneries nature, and civilization. While Adams uses in his photography a certain amount or type of lighting natural or man made. An yes in todays current art it's acceptable for someone to produce art with just beauty in mind, and no content behind it! After all isn't art just art, whatever you want it to be wether theirs meaning or not it's a creative product of your expression!
ReplyDeleteRobert Adams, Ansel Adams, and Thomas Cole have all represent landscape in different, but beautiful ways. For instance Robert Adams and Ansel Adams both do black and white photographs. While Thomas Cole does more painting. Also, Robest Adams' photographs show America in the past four decades. Ansel Adams concentrates more on the National Park, and Thomas Cole relies on European conventions of landscape painting. He also represents, through his paintings, the struggle between wilderness and civilization; his painting "The Otbow" represents this. Robest Adams' photographs in the other hand, represent with delight what remains if the West. Ansel Adams also portrays the beauty of the West.
